Outpatient Methadone Detox

Methadone withdrawal and detox is widely known to be extraordinarily uncomfortable and difficult, even with skilled medical intervention.  In patients who have tried to detox, the Post Acute Withdrawal Syndrome (PAWS) can be incredibly long and difficult, lasting up to a year or more sometimes.  Many facilities will not even attempt to detox someone off of Methadone.  Specialized options have been developed for Methadone detox, including the use of Buprenorphine (Subutex/ Suboxone) and Naltrexone (ReVia, Vivitrol). The use of these and other medications greatly reduces the intensity of opiate withdrawal symptoms. Patients have often come off of amounts exceeding 200mg and sometimes even 300mg of Methadone a day. Most patients can continue working full time while undergoing this process, due to the stability and comfort achieved.  Outpatient Methadone detox costs just a fraction of what an inpatient detox would cost, with additional savings coming from very little to no opportunity cost from missed work time.

The slower and more methodical detox pace follows the body’s natural physiology, which is much safer than a rushed 5 to 7 day detox.  Post-acute withdrawal symptoms (PAWS) from Methadone are managed promptly and effectively, which further improves comfort and reduces relapse rates.  This is in stark contrast to inpatient facilities, where patients have already been discharged before post-acute withdrawal symptoms develop, leaving them no recourse with how to effectively deal with them.  Many individuals that have just been through an inpatient detox come to the Delray Center due to the debilitating post-acute withdrawal symptoms they are still experiencing.  Symptoms such as fatigue, insomnia, hot flashes, pain, nausea, night sweats, loss of appetite, and muscle spasms are directly screened for and managed effectively.  A detox is not considered complete until all of the withdrawal and post-acute withdrawal symptoms are fully resolved.
